The Internet has made it possible for people to pay their bills and do their shopping and banking right from their homes. Because this is so simple to do online, many people keep their personal information at hand on their laptops or PDAs, as well as the passwords or PIN numbers to their accounts. This information may seem safely stored away, but the truth is that it's not difficult at all for a savvy thief to access the information he wants by hacking into your computer, even from a distance.

Thanks to Internet, many people these days are enjoying the convenience of banking, paying bills and shopping from the convenience of their own home. And many of these people find it convenient to store a lot of personal data on their computers or PDAs, including their credit card and banking information and even their user names, passwords, and PINs. The danger of doing this is that a skillful hacker has no trouble accessing a computer from anywhere in the world and getting the information that the owner thought was so safely stored in the computer’s files.

You shouldn’t only be worried about the money you have in the bank or your credit card numbers being figured out and used, either. The fact is, once a criminal has your account information, he can actually assume your identity and apply for more credit cards, loans and other sources of credit. Your credit can be ruined for the rest of your life if the wrong person gets your information and uses it to their advantage. In order to keep this from happening to you, use the tips contained in this article to keep your sensitive information safe.

1. The first precautionary step that you should take is to set up your computer or PDA so that a password is needed before any files can be accessed.

2. Also make sure that your passwords are not stored in the computer. A lot of people have chosen the convenience of having their computer remember their passwords and enter them automatically. But the convenience isn’t worth losing your identity to someone you don’t know.

3. File sharing is the transfer of information between one computer and another, and it allows for easier access to your information. If your network allows file sharing and you use it, make sure you are protecting your password.

4. Another layer of protection is to change your passwords and any security questions that are used by some sites at frequent intervals.

5. Use a firewall and antivirus software and be sure that they are always updated and running.

6. Phishing is one way thieves get your information illegally, so watch out for it. The thief sends out numerous emails that claim to be from a legitimate business, often a credit card company or a major bank. Typically you will be asked to verify your PIN number, password or other account information. If you send them the information, they will use it to clean out your bank account.

7. It is usually safe to shop online, but you need to only give your credit card number to sites that have been verified and are secure. The best option for online shopping is to use PayPal or another third-party company that can transfer funds securely.

There are many ways that you can become a victim of identity theft. In fact, nobody is completely safe from the threat of this devastating crime. Get the identity theft facts you need at Protect My Identity.

The purpose of this article is a review of FreeCreditReport.com and the services that the company offers. It is our objective to present an overview that will educate the reader and help them determine whether, or not, they want to use their service.

By now, we all know the TV commercials. We remember their little jingles, and nearly everyone has heard of freecreditreport.com. But we are presenting this information due to a number of negative customer feedback, a lot of confusion, and two very frequent questions.

Is the credit report really free? Is freecreditreport.com considered a scam?

Freecreditreport.com is an affiliation of Experian. There are three major credit bureaus in the United States. Trans Union, Equifax, and Experian (which used to be T.R.W.) This means that freecreditreport.com is actually partly owned by one of the credit bureaus.

However the service that freecreditreport.com actually provides is called credit monitoring. Most experts agree that having a credit monitoring service is an absolute necessity if you really want to protect yourself against identity theft. Every year millions of people fall victim to identity theft and it is increasing. If it has happen to you, or someone you know, then you already know it can cause a multitude of problems. Fixing it to get your credit report corrected can be a nightmare. A credit monitoring service will alert you immediately if an inquiry is made on you, if someone pulls your credit report, if a new account is attempted to be opened with your info, etc. You can then catch it before it causes you problems.

The credit monitoring service at Freecreditreport.com website is called Triple Advantage. The service is $19.99 per month. After you sign up and become a member you get unlimited access to view your credit report. There is an initial 7 day period after you sign up where you can change your mind and cancel to any charges. The company says that even if you miss that 7 day period you can still cancel at anytime and avoid any more monthly charges.

So back to those two questions: Is your credit report really free? Most people will say the answer is no. Because you can’t get the credit report unless you sign up and pay for their monitoring service. Is freecreditreport.com a scam? All the lawyers will also say the answer is no. Because the monthly fee is only for the monitoring service. Viewing your credit report is a totally separate benefit provided at no additional charge.

The enormous controversy is that many people feel the freecreditreport.com advertising is extremely misleading. We have viewed all their TV commercials and, just like the car commercials and the prescription drug commercials, freecreditreport.com has the legally require stuff in very small print at the bottom of the ad. And at the very end someone announces in very fast talk “Offer applies to enrollment in Triple Advantage”

We’ve concluded that the bottom line is they are a company that has a website name which is bound to lead to mass confusion. Some may say that is wrong and other may say that is very clever marketing. Either way they are clearly benefiting from that confusion.

But it is also creating a lot of complaints and angry consumer feedback. Because the overwhelming majority of people who see the commercial and then goes to freecreditreport.com website are not looking to sign up for a monthly credit monitoring service. They are just simply looking to get their credit reports.

It has caused so much of an issue that the FTC (federal trade commission) got involved. The government required freecreditreport.com to be more clearly direct about their services. Since then we have not notice any changes in their TV spots. On the other hand, the website itself now has a disclaimer at the very top of the page that is hard to miss.

But, there is a clear and less confusing option if you are someone that just wants to pay for your credit report and nothing else. This service is also offered by one of the other credit bureaus, Equifax. It gives you’re the option of a one time only charge for your credit report.

We hope this information has been a benefit to you. Our only intention was to try and provide some answers to the questions concerning freecreditreport.com. And to inform consumers that other options are available to them.

Consumers Info USA reviews surveys, and customer feedback, to provide links to the best online services. For more information on credit reports, the importance of knowing what is on your credit report, and a link to order your report for a single, one time price, go now to: http://www.consumersinfousa.com/order_your_credit_report.html

Identity theft can be absolutely devastating. It’s also unfortunately very common. Think of all of the risks that you take. Right now, is your social security card in your wallet or purse? It should not be.

You should also be shredding all documents with your social security number on them when you don’t need them anymore. Are you already doing this? Most people don’t, which puts them at risk.

Your garbage can contain all of the information that a scammer needs to steal your identity. If your social security number falls in the wrong hands, you could end up with massive debt in your name that you didn’t even incur.

It’s not even hard to do! A quick phone call can be all that a person needs to open up a new account. If they have an address, the social security number, your name, and your birthday, they’re all set.

Scammers can call up and tell people that they won a fantastic prize, and that all they need to do to claim the prize is verify their social security number, and many people will provide this information right over the phone to a complete stranger! They get excited, and they quit thinking about security.

For name and birthday, that’s easy. Most people will just tell you this info if you ask them. Now this same scammer would have enough to call up the phone company and order all of the top services and equipment and options, all in your name, and you would end up getting stuck with the bill. You’re probably thinking, but they would get arrested! Well, they could, but usually they don’t stick around in any one place all that long. They’ll be on to the next scam by the time you realize your identity is stolen and call the authorities.

Some identity thieves who are very intelligent and motivated can even cobble together entire identities for use by illegal immigrants. An illegal immigrant with your information can use it to cross the border, get a job, get a place to live, turn on utilities, and so on. All of this would happen in your name, and on your credit record.

You may not even know it is happening. It can take months, sometimes years, before you realize that there is something wrong. Consider this scenario: the IRS contacts you and tells you that you own three homes and are being taxed accordingly. But you don’t – you don’t even own one! It could happen, and it could really mess up your life.

And an ounce of security will be more useful as compared to a lot of cure. Thus, follow these identity theft prevention protection measures and live a happier and safer life.

If you have an important document and you do not want another person to know this, purchasing paper shredders is a good option for you. You can also destroy the data or document by using shredders paper that offers you much benefit.

Identity theft has become a fairly common crime and, unfortunately, is very costly for the victim. However, there are some things that you can do to help protect yourself from it, including the following identity theft protection:

1. Get into the habit of checking your credit. Federal law entitles you to obtain a free copy of your credit reports from the three major credit monitoring credit bureaus once a year.

2. Never place your credit card statements and bills in your outgoing trash, and never throw away the credit card offers you receive in the mail unless you shred them first. Investing in a paper shredder that also has the ability to cut up your old credit/debit cards is the best solution for destroying this kind of mail so that your personal details can remain safe.

3. Be extra cautious when you use your PIN number for credit charges or at an ATM machine. “Shoulder surfing” is a very popular way for identity thieves to get your personal information from you.

4. Take special care when you receive calls from “companies” asking for your personal information. You may be giving your personal information to a scam artist rather than to a reputable company. It is always best to ask the name of the company and then look it up on your own if you are interested in the offer they’re making you.

Identity theft can affect your ability to buy a home, a car, or even acquire credit. Remember, if there are purchases made in your name, and they are not disputed, creditors will assume the purchases made were made by you, not someone posing to be you. Understanding how to protect yourself from identity theft will give you the upper hand you need to stop it before it makes an even larger impact on your ability to secure credit. Remember, your good name is at stake – not to mention your credit history.

Another downfall of identity theft is that you could end up paying a lot of money and going through lots of red tape to correct the damage. This involves tracking the information on your credit report by keeping a paper trail of your actual purchases and unpaid loans or bills. By doing so, if a discrepancy is found, you’ll be able to start repairing the damage and stave off any further fraudulent activities.

Statistics show that every three seconds someone’s identity is stolen. This means that every one of us is a target and we must learn how to protect our lives, credit, and identity. If you choose to look away thinking it will never happen to you, you could be asking for trouble. Someday, a creditor or the IRS could call you to inform you that you owe a lot more money than you thought. Then you will have to go through the time-consuming process of proving you are innocent. Why go through that when there are things you can do proactively to ensure your identity remains safe?

Here’s what you can do:

1. Know where you stand with each of the three major credit bureaus. You are entitled by federal law to obtain a copy of your credit reports free each year.

2. Opt out of unsolicited credit card offers. The Federal Trade Commission offers a phone number you can call to stop all unsolicited mail and telemarketing calls, including pre-approved credit card applications. Avoiding these can help you avoid identity theft.

3. If you suspect you’ve already become a victim of , put fraud alerts on your credit report. This will require lenders to follow extra precautionary measures prior to opening any new accounts for a credit card, car loan, cell phone, etc. in your name. It can help protect you from credit fraud and identity theft; however, keep in mind that not only is the law difficult to enforce, it only protects you from new account fraud. So consider it just one part of identity theft protection.

4. Buy a paper shredder and make a habit of using it regularly. Shred everything that could give someone else personal insight into who you are, including any and all correspondence that mentions your valuable personal information.

5. Possibly the most important thing you can do is hire professionals to help you protect your identity for you. There are many services, such as www.IDENTITYGUARD.com, that can offer you the affordable credit monitoring protection you need.

The advancements in technology have given birth to great inventions such as the computer and the internet. With our very modern and hectic lives, we have overly benefited from using computers coupled with the internet.

But we have to understand every bit of the two as well.

What we do not really know is that whenever we browse the internet and go to websites that require us to key in personal information is that our computer actually keeps tabs on these things and collects all those data and stores it in our hard disk.

Because we do not find these files in our desktops, we do not really know of such things.

And it does not stop there, our computers also store information that we save in our computers offline. Even if we try to delete these files from our recycle bins, a back up copy of the file is stored in our hard disk somewhere which is just waiting for someone to discover it.

I do not think that I have to narrate how seriously detrimental it would be to have information fall into the wrong person’s hands, especially with all the identity theft going on at the moment.

We have seen how identity theft has destroyed most of our lives the risk is aggravated when we share computers with other people.

The good side of things is that simple software can do the trick.

An evidence eraser program can scan your computer for files that you may not want to have lying around and effectively remove all these files so that you would no longer find any trace of the files that you do not want to keep. Such mechanism is even employed by the government.

Another aspect of evidence eraser is that it can empty several history folders that record out every move. It can remove files from our internet history and history of opened documents at the same time clean out the internet cache and temp files folder.

Thousands of people each year fall victim to identity theft scams. Regardless of whether these efforts be via a land line, a mobile phone, email or any other form of communication, hundreds of attempts occur each minute that passes. Though large scale identity theft scams are publicized on news channels and on online news, they’re only reported after some people have previously become victims. People who arm themselves with some basic knowledge about identity theft scams can avoid becoming one of the unfortunate ones who lose a lot of money, and time fighting to possibly get the money back.

Those who attempt identity theft scams try to get personal information like one’s address, phone number, social security number and credit card or account information. With this personal information, they’re able to use a person’s credit standing and reputation in order to apply charges on their credit cards, pull cash out of their accounts and get loans in their name. As such, it is every individual’s responsibility to maintain their personal information private. In doing so, they can avoid identity theft scams.

A first step to protecting one’s information is to begin with hard copies. This means all of one’s bank statements, credit card bills, utility bills and all papers which have one’s address and any account info on it. If one is intending to maintain these sorts of papers, then they need to be stored in a locked file cabinet, safety deposit box or other secure spot where access can be controlled. If one is intending to throw any of these away, then disposal needs to be secure. Investing in an inexpensive cross cut shredder is a great investment, and should be used for all papers with personally identifiable info.

When it comes to telephone communications, regardless of whether land line or mobile, one should never supply anyone with their individual information in this manner. If one gets a text message asking for any individual data, they should never reply to it. No matter who the text is allegedly coming from, one should only share the information by voice- this way if a friend or family member’s cell telephone was stolen, calling will verify that the voice belongs to the person who is supposedly texting. If one receives a call from a creditor or any company asking for account numbers, remember that these companies should already have your info and that calls like this might be identity theft scams. Merely ask for a number to call them back to confirm that it is a valid call before you disseminate your account number.

Safeguarding one’s electronic information is just as important. There are many individuals in the world who are smart enough to hack into another individual’s pc, so placing the utmost protection on internet enabled devices is not only wise but absolutely imperative. Wireless connections ought to be secured with passwords, and security software should be installed to protect from viruses and other things that can access or destroy your data. Identity theft scams can be prevented, but one needs to ensure they treat their individual info like their debit pin code.

Don’t Fall Victim To Identity Theft Scams! Use An Identity Theft Service
